The 37-year-old man was traveling on Candler Highway at around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday when his Jeep collided with a tractor trailer on the roadway near Lee Land Road.
The victim was transported to the hospital with what were originally described as “critical” injuries. He passed away at the hospital.
At the time of the accident, it was reported someone had died on the scene, though Georgia State Patrol Sgt. Anthony Coleman says those reports were wrong at the time.
The driver of the tractor trailer is a 53-year-old male from Crawford. He did not reportedly suffer any injuries in the incident.
According to Coleman, the Jeep did not maintain its lane at the time of the accident, crossing over into the tractor trailer’s lane. The truck reportedly attempted to swerve, but the victim’s Jeep struck the trailer being pulled.
The Hall County Sheriff’s Office has already responded to 47 motor vehicle accidents in September, according to GEARS accident tracker.
The sheer size of tractor trailers makes them especially dangerous in a collision situation. According to the Federal Motor Carrier Administration, over 2,000 fatalities in accidents involving large trucks, such as tractor trailers, have occurred each recorded year since 2012.
In 2014, more than 2,400 of these deadly accidents took place.
