The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office reports that the incident happened between Aaron Sosebee Road and Chamblee Gap Road in western Forsyth County at approximately 4 p.m.
The injuries to the bicyclist, a 22-year-old Cumming woman, were severe enough that firefighters originally wanted to airlift the victim to the hospital but after hearing that the helicopter’s response time would be longer than anticipated, decided to transport her by ambulance to North Fulton Hospital in Roswell Forsyth County News reports.
A 1993 Honda Civic, driven by a man from Cumming, crossed over the fog line and struck the bicycle’s tire. Law enforcement reports that, after impact, the victim landed on the pavement 38 feet from her bicycle.
Reports indicate she was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.
After being taken to North Fulton, the victim was transported to Grady Hospital in Atlanta. On Monday, members of the victim’s family reported that she was in stable condition.
The sheriff’s office is investigating the wreck, and there have been no charges filed at this point. Neither excessive speed, drugs, or alcohol are being considered as causes in the collision.
After early reports of the accident, rumors began to swirl that the wreck was a hit and run, a rumor that the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office put to rest on its Facebook page.
Referring to social media posts claiming that the driver had fled the scene after the incident, the message read: “These posts are incorrect and we have asked the posters to remove them. The crash was not a hit-and-run. This appears to be another case of Facebook rumors that we see too frequently.”
The sheriff’s office Facebook page also stated it could not release any specific information about the victim’s injuries.
Canton Highway remained closed for two hours Saturday afternoon as police cleared the road.
Steven Leibel, North Georgia Super Lawyer, commented saying that “Bicycle accidents present complicated legal issues. Typical rules of the road apply, but insurance issues are problematic. Our office recently resolved a bicycle -auto accident for close to 300,000 dollars due to the nature of our client’s injuries.”
