Teen Transported to Grady after Semi-Truck Collision in Cumming

A young man from Cumming was airlifted to Atlanta to be treated for injuries sustained in an accident with a tractor trailer the afternoon of July 21.

The wreck happened in western Forsyth County on Canton Highway near Mountain Valley Road at approximately 6:45, according to the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office. Forsyth County News reports that a 19-year-old male pulled out of a gas station on Canton Highway and found his way in the path of a semi-truck, which struck his vehicle on the driver’s side.

Firefighters from the Forsyth County Fire Department had to free the man from his car before he could be taken by medical helicopter to Grady Hospital in Atlanta.

The driver of the tractor trailer was also transported to the hospital. The 53-year-old man was taken to Northside Hospital Forsyth with reports of back pain.

There has been no official determination to the cause of the crash and the investigation is ongoing.

Law enforcement closed at least a portion of Canton Highway while it worked to clear the scene the evening of July 21.

Tractor trailers are regulated by the government to assure that many safety regulations are followed. In any accident case it is incumbent upon those investigating the wreck to have knowledge of the many regulations involved and the requirement imposed on drivers to obtain adequate rest and document their driving hours.

Over 11,000 crashes involving semi-trucks occurred in the U.S. in 2014, according to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. More than 700 of those wrecks were fatal.

The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office has responded to over 352 auto accidents in July and more than 3,500 accidents in 2016 according to GEARS accident tracker.
